The Optimist Run: a mini cannonball run

A friend of ours just created a company called the Optimist Group which will specialize in promotions of upscale events that merge music, visual art, fashion, performance, theater and other special interests.

We got a call a few weeks ago regarding a mini cannon ball run/ mystery event that they were putting together called RUN. Naturally, we chose to support a great cause and decided to join in on the rally from Malibu to San Diego. The flyer for the event is below. Optimist RUNGiven this was the first RUN rally, our buddy invited a close group of friends to participate and give feedback, with the intent to duplicate the event on a bigger scale in the near future.

We were planning on taking the AMU S2000 to do some canyon carving but due to some recent upgrades (stay tuned), the car wasn’t ready in time for the rally. Instead, we rolled in a Firestorm FR-S equipped with a TRD Exhaust system and a BRZ styled rear lip spoiler. We had a blast taking corners in the FR-S and it was definitely a great substitute for the S2K.
Optimist RUN Back to the rally: Most cannonball runs have multiple checkpoints on the way to the final destination, but this rally had a twist involving a murder mystery. Since we all planned to watch the new Fast & Furious movie while in San Diego, our buddy incorporated characters from the movie along with elements from other movies like “Drive” and “Transporter” to create the story line. Each driver was given a role or character and was tasked to  find out who the traitor was amongst the group. Each team was also given a packet filled with clues that would lead us to the next checkpoint and give us more information about the murder as we continued our journey.

Optimist RUN Optimist RUNDSC_0380 copyLastly, we were tasked to find and photograph certain landmarks and automobiles along our journey as bonus points. The team that reached all of checkpoints first, solved the mystery and completed all the bonus tasks won the rally. Granted we are “AutoMobile Uploads”, we had no problem spotting and capturing the rarest automotive finds on our journey to SD.

DSC_0591 copyA couple of notable stops along the way to San Diego were the McLaren store and also the Ferrari store, both located in Newport Beach. Check out some pics we snapped below.

Optimist RunAfter a long and rewarding 8 hour trip, we arrived in Downtown San Diego.

Optimist RunAfter our arrival, we checked into our hotels and we all split off to enjoy some sun in SD, but reconvened for dinner where the winner of the Optimist Rally was announced.

To our surprise, the AMU team was able to obtain the most bonus points and we managed to secure a 1st place win. We were awarded with an official Wheelman Trophy along with various car care items, DVD’s etc. We were just happy to have been included in the testing phases of what will soon be a massive event, but we were especially happy to get some bragging rights. ;)

BimmerFest 2013 at the Rose Bowl

BimmerFest 2013

So, we’re headed to BimmerFest and upon exiting the freeway in Pasadena, what do we see? Bimmer, Bimmer, Mini Cooper, Bimmer, and another Bimmer. If someone was unfamiliar with the Pasadena area looking for BimmerFest, it would be relatively easy to figure out that they were headed in the right direction. For those attending the event driving anything other than a BMW product, you would definitely feel like turning around and driving to the nearest BMW dealership to trade in your car.

With that said, the single best reason to check out BimmerFest is because more than 70% of the cars are driven in to the event. This means, you get to see loads of #BimmerPorn before you even get to the front gate. Most owners coordinate huge caravans and drive up to the event together, racing up and down the curvy back roads in Pasadena. A mix of M3 exhaust notes, blow off valves and aggressive BBS wheel set ups almost made our day complete before we parked. Not to say the actual event is not worh the money, but a local resident might get their fill on a lawn chair outside their house.

Another reason to love BimmerFest is because there is always a good mix of old, new, modified and original cars to marvel over. Whether you’re a 2002 kinda guy or an E92 kinda guy, there’s something for you.

BimmerFest 2013 took place at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on May 18th, 2013 and there were roughly 1 million Bimmers in attendance. Ok, maybe not 1 million but there were definitely too many to count. Here are a few Bimmers that stood out from the pack. Make sure you leave comments, share the pictures and definitely follow us on Facebook and Instagram @AutoMobileUploads. Enjoy!

ToyotaFest 2013 presented by T.O.R.C

Toyotafest T.O.R.C Scion xB

The AMU Krew had the opportunity to attend and shoot yet another All Toyotafest event at the Queen Mary in Long Beach. This year made the 18th annual event that the T.O.R.C organization has put together. Like others in the past, there was a healthy mix of Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles, new and old and definitely both wild and original builds. If you’ve never been to a Toyotafest and consider yourself to be a fan of both Toyota heritage vehicles and the new product lines, then it’s definitely worth your time to check it out.

T.O.R.C is short for the Toyota Owners and Restorers Club. T.O.R.C was established in 1995 aiming to target all Toyota model owners. Although, T.O.R.C welcomes all Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles, the website mentions that their primary directive is to promote the preservation, restoration, modification & use of pre-1985 models. The club’s goal is to promote and encourage an appreciation of Toyota, it’s heritage, and it’s future.

Check out some of the photos that we snapped from the event and tell us what you think. Enjoy!

Won and Done! Check out the Race!

Won and Done

The AMU Krew got some footage of the Izzy Performance Truck going head to head with Gypsy’s 5.0 Mustang last Thursday on an episode of Won and Done at Irwindale Speedway.

Won and Done is an internet series where two vehicles compete in a single drag race where everything about the race is negotiable, from the lanes, the distance, the car lengths and the start. Once the negotiation is finalized, the vehicles line up and the first racer to the finish-line, wins. The winner earns $500 and the right to compete another day. The loser’s VIN number is recorded and that vehicle is DONE forever….banned for life from the show. Any vehicle that stays undefeated for 10 races, will win a $50,000 bonus!

Rich Christensen created and will host the series which will also feature Morgan Lucas, NHRA Top Fuel competitor and son of MAVTV owner Forrest Lucas. Check out the action from last Thursday’s race and tell us what you think. Don’t forget to check out our Youtube page @AMUPerformance for more videos.

How To: Headlight Restoration

While washing the S2000 the other day, I noticed that the headlights were beginning to get a bit cloudy. Immediately, I remembered all of the commercials on TV about D.I.Y headlight restoration. So I decided to set some time aside on Sunday and bring my S2K back to life.

Note: (Modern cars all have headlights made of plastic. Continuous exposure to the sun, heat, smog and chemicals is what makes your headlights oxidize over time. The oxidation process strips the plastic from it’s original shine and clarity, leaving your lights dull and discolored.)

Here’s an example of what I mean.

S2000 Headlight Restoration

(Above is the driver side headlight on my S2000. Notice that the lens has lost clarity and is beginning to turn yellow.)

So, I made a quick trip to O’reilly Auto Parts and picked up a few things to get my project rolling.

Here’s what I used:

1. Mothers PowerBall 4Lights Headlight Restoration Kit

2. Automotive Masking Tape

3. Cordless Power Drill

4. Gloves

S2000 Headlight Restoration

Step 1:

I taped off the body panels surrounding each headlight so I wouldn’t accidentally scratch my paint.

S2000 Headlight Restoration

Step 2:

I Attached the  Mothers Powerball to to my cordless drill

S2000 Headlight Restoration

Step 3:

I applied a quarter size application of the Mothers polish to the powerball

S2000 Headlight Restoration

S2000 Headlight Restoration

Step 4:

I put my drill on the slowest speed setting and slowly polished my headlamp section by section. I split my headlight into fourths and applied more polish for each section. After  that, I proceeded to give the entire headlight a once over to make sure that I didn’t miss any spots along the way. After I was done with the polish application, I wiped the headlight clean with the microfiber towel included in the kit.

S2000 Headlight Restoration

S2000 Headlight Restoration

Look at the difference between the polished light (to the right) and the oxidized headlight (to the left). BIG difference.

Step 5:

I repeated steps 1, 3 and 4 for the passengers side headlight

Step 6.

I removed the masking tape from both of my headlights and applied a little spray on wax from my detailing kit. (I recommend applying a higher quality wax on the headlights for added protection if you have some laying around)

And there you have it; In about 30 minutes or less and $20 later, my car actually looks years newer than it did. I didn’t have to pay to have a professional wet sand my headlights and I didn’t have to buy new ones. Definitely a great investment.

I posted a few more before and after pictures below.

Good luck restoring yours!

AutoMobile Uploads Ford Mustang GT Race Car

The AutoMobile Uploads Krew has several project cars in the works but we would like to take a moment and highlight our centerfold project for 2013.

Introducing the AutoMobile Uploads Mustang GT Race Car.

P1080493 copy

P1080489 copy

Len from AutoMobile Uploads purchased his Mustang GT bone stock in 2005. Less than a week later the modifications began. Since then, his GT has been through numerous transformations to obtain the most RWHP while remaining a “Street” car. We’ve been able to drive his car to and from the race track while posting 7 second 1/8th mile times.

Actually the 7.11 second 1/8th mile at Irwindale has been both the gift and the curse. Len’s car didn’t have a roll cage installed at the time and was kicked off of the track until he had one put in. He decided he’d kill two birds with one stone and sent his car to the shop for a custom roll cage install while his tuner changed out his cams for boost cams and made some transmission adjustments. Unfortunately while the car was on the dyno, the engine threw a rod (The curse).  Essentially, the car now needs a new block and will need to be rebuilt from the ground up, which means much more $$$. BUT, on the bright side, we have the opportunity to take the time to build a stronger motor and develop our goals moving forward for next year (The Gift).

The plan is to build a 750-800 rwhp Mustang GT that will run a 9 second quarter mile without Nitrous.  This car should also have the ability to be driven to and from the track with no trailers etc.

We also have made plans to improve upon the cosmetics and acquire sponsorships etc., with intent to show the car as the AutoMobile Uploads Mustang next year. The list of shows will be announced closer to date, but our main goal is to secure a spot at the SEMA show next Fall.

We will continue to photograph and take video of the build to keep you all posted on how things are coming along. We encourage you all to stay tuned both here and on our Facebook page to get the latest info on our build.

For those that are curious about the specifics, we’ve listed all of the equipment on both the old motor and on the new build.

Shoot us an email at Automobileuploads@gmail.com with any questions related to the Mustang build.

How to pick the right wheels for your car

While shooting pictures at a car show the other day, the AMU krew had a discussion about what makes some cars more attractive than others. It turned out to be a pretty brief conversation because we all agreed fairly quickly, that the wheel choice and fitment can make or break your car.

With that said, we figured it would be a good idea if we put together a post that may help with your wheel selection process.

First things first.

WHY?

You have to ask yourself  “Why am I buying wheels for my car?”

Gas Mileage/Comfort

If your answer is better gas-mileage or a more comfortable ride, we suggest first considering a different tire that may ride more comfortably and or help your car get better gas mileage. Your local tire shop will be able to help you select a set of tires that will best fit your needs. (Tirerack.com is another good tool to use)

Purchasing a set of tires instead of a wheel/tire combo can save you tons of money and also save you the embarrassment of rolling around on poorly designed/styled bargain wheels. By AMU standards, there is nothing worse than an aftermarket wheel that looks and fits worse than your stock wheels. #FAIL

Appearance

If your reason for purchasing a set of wheels is to enhance your cars’ appearance, then it may be time for you to look into an upgraded wheel and tire.

However, they say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so even though the AMU Krew usually has the same taste in wheels, everyone will have their own opinion on which wheel styles look best on every car.

Although the style of the wheel may be more subjective, the AMU team agrees that an aggressive wheel fitment teamed up with a decent suspension drop can turn any car into a jaw dropper. Obtaining the widest wheel and the lowest offset possible is the rule that most show car builders live by today.

The goal is to make sure that the outside of your wheels align with both front and rear fenders. This look takes a lot of time and effort and is highly respected in the tuner community because those who’ve ever attempted this fitment know how tedious and expensive it can be to find the perfect fit. Many refer to this movement as the HellaFlush movement where fitment is everything and they value form over function.

We’ll go into more detail about offsets and fitment later. For now, here are a few examples of aggressive wheels fitments.

Performance

What about if I’m planning to head to the track?

As far as performance goes, you may benefit from a larger wheel and a lower profile tire, but the main thing you want to consider before heading out to the track is a good set of sticky performance tires. Even with suspension upgrades, braking and cornering will be dramatically compromised with the use of generic (crappy) tires.

Something else to consider in regards to performance is usually obtaining a wider tire or wheel/tire combo. Without getting too technical, traction = friction and the best way to create more friction is to increase the surface area of contact between your rubber and the road. More simply put, wider tires are typically better for track or spirited driving conditions. It’s not necessary to go out and buy larger diameter wheels but some would agree that low profile tires have less sidewall flex which may help you grip around corners.

Budget

These wheels cost how much???

The next thing you want to ask yourself is “How much do I want to spend on my wheels?” From experience, we can all say that nice wheels are never cheap; by cheap, we mean inexpensive. If your budget is looking something like $300 for 18″ wheels with tires then you may want to consider just getting an iPod instead. Cheap wheels tend to have less rigidity, less “Offset” options and may weigh more than you stock wheels.

Wheel companies like SSR or Rotiform specialize in tailoring wheels to fit your cars style. These wheel options cost a pretty penny but they are well worth it as they look like they were made specifically for your car.

So in short, if you’re going for “The Right Look”, do some research and pick a wheel that has lots of offset choices for your car and open up your wallet. ;)

Offest

What is offset?

Offset is best described as the distance from the hub mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel. This measurement is usually referred to in millimeters.

There are 3 types of offsets (pictured above)

Zero Offset:

In this scenario, the hub mounting surface is even with the wheel centerline. In other words, there is equal distance from the hub to the face of the wheel on both sides.

Positive:

The hub mounting surface is toward the front or wheel side of the wheel. Positive offset wheels are generally found on front wheel drive cars and newer rear drive cars.

Negative:

The hub mounting surface is toward the back or brake side of the wheels center-line. “Deep dish” wheels are typically a negative offset.

If the offset of the wheel is not correct for the car, the handling can be adversely affected. When you decide on wheels that are wider than your stock wheels, you will need to choose the correct offset that will clear all suspension components on the inside of the wheel and also fit within the constraints of your cars’ fenders. When purchasing your wheels, make your offset choice a priority in your wheels decision. Your local wheel shop should be able to guide you in the right direction with any concerns.
So, where do I start?

We mentioned a few sites above to get you started on your wheel hunt but here is a complete list of places you should check out for wheels and tires. Good Luck, and we hope that this wheel advice helped.

2. Discount Tire

3. Enkei Wheels

4. SSR Wheels

5. Vossen Wheels

6. Rotiform Wheels

Cars and Coffee Irvine

What is Cars and Coffee you ask? What if we told you it was just that – Cars and Coffee.

Every Saturday morning just before 6:00 AM, hundreds of Imports, Exotics and American Muscle cars come pouring into Mazda Campus parking lot in Irvine, CA. In a matter of 30 minutes the entire parking lot is flooded with jaw dropping show cars. To top it off, coffee, donuts and breakfast burritos get delivered first thing in the morning for those like us that ”need our fix.”

Camera in hand, we peruse the parking lot for rare finds new and old. No matter how often we attend, we always spot tons of new and unique vehicles. So we make our rounds and snap some pics, then post up for one of our favorite part; “The Exit”

The show lasts from 6am – 9am but many stay for a short period of time and then BOUNCE. After we finish shooting pictures, we stand right at the parking lot exit and watch Million dollar cars speed off into the distance.

Note: There is a police officer that waits right near the exit and will cite you for exhibition of speed.

We think the pictures speak for themselves, but in the event you needed more convincing, here is a short list of Pros.

  1. Cars
  2. Coffee
  3. There is something for everyone
  4. The show occurs every single week
  5. Since the show starts at 6:00 am, you still have the rest of your Saturday to enjoy.
  6.  You can talk to the owners
  7. You get to view static show cars and see them start up and take off

Need we say more?

All American Motors Car Show & Swap Meet

Many people today aren’t familiar with AMC or American Motors Corporation. Just to give you some brief history, AMC was formed by the 1954 merger of Nash-Kelvinator Corp. and  Hudson Motor Car Company. Over the years, AMC produced many models from the AMX to the Pacer to the Hornet and even one of Americas first 4×4 crossovers, the AMC Eagle. AMC later merged with Renault to obtain funding and supply Renault with subcompact designs. Soon after, Renault acquired AMC and then sold the division to Chrysler to use the AMC Eagle to fuel the Jeep/Eagle line up that we know today.

Saturday afternoon the AMU crew drove down to El Segundo to check out the All American Car Show and Swap Meet that we’d seen advertised online. As mentioned before, not many of our youth are familiar with AMC so we figured we’d shoot some pictures, shake some hands and kiss some babies.

So. Cal AMC lead by George Markos, hosts the AMC car show monthly and even has its own website and owners forum @ Socalamc.com.  There were some really clean AMC’s out there and a really good representation of the brand. Check out the pictures and tell us what you think.
